The Field Training Unit is a vital part of the police department at San Diego State University. The unit is overseen by a Field Training Officer Sergeant and several Field Training Officers (FTO). Field Training Officers are selected through a rigorous testing and selection process. The FTO program follows the Commission of Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Field Training Program model. The POST Field Training Program model provides comprehensive guidelines and structured learning content for an effective training program that facilitates newly assigned peace officers transition from an academic setting to field training where they gain hands-on experience that will become the foundation of their career. The San Diego State University Field Training Program consists of 16 weeks of field training. During this time the trainees will be required to perform various law enforcement duties under the guidance and supervision of their assigned FTO and a Field Training Program Sergeant. Upon successful completion of training the officer will be assigned to patrol. Department leaders and field training program staff have a responsibility to the community they serve. This responsibility requires that the department train and retain only the most competent officers. The SDSU Police Department prides itself on producing highly competent officers to serve you.
