Traffic Enforcement at SDSU
The department’s patrol division is responsible for enforcing California Vehicle Code statutes, enforcement of local traffic ordinances, and investigation of vehicle collisions.
The purpose of traffic enforcement in and around SDSU is to create safer roadways for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. This is accomplished through enforcing traffic laws, educating citizens, and addressing any traffic related issues.
Another function of the patrol division is to investigate traffic collisions that occur within the SDSU community. All SDSU police officers are sent to a state certified Traffic Accident Investigation course qualifying them to properly investigate traffic collisions. Senior officers also attend higher level courses and get certified in intermediate, advanced, and collision reconstruction.
In addition, the patrol division is responsible for conducting Operator License, Registration and DUI checkpoints as well as generalized DUI enforcement and saturation patrols. SDSU participates in county-wide campaigns such as "Avoid the Fourteen" and "Click It or Ticket," funded through Officer Traffic Safety grants. Alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes kill someone every 31 minutes and non-fatally injure someone every two minutes (NHTSA 2006). The SDSU Police Department takes a proactive approach to combat drunk driving through vigilance in and around the college area.
